- I studied Geology and Paleontology at the Universities of Mainz (Germany) and Natal (Pietermaritzburg, South Africa).
- Doctoral studies were carried out at the Max-Planck-Institut für Chemie in Mainz (Geochemistry Section).
- Postdoctoral fellow at the U.S. Geological Survey in Denver and the Colorado School of Mines, Golden (1983-1986, NASA-stipend).
- Until 1990, NSERC-sponsored research at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon and at the Geological Survey of Canada, Ottawa.
- Thereafter, Research Scientist at the University of Tübingen.
- Since 1999, Professor of Geochemistry at the University of Munich.
