Master DAAD

Research Theme: Textural and mineralogical characterisation of highly devitrified extensive rheoignimbrites in a Large Igneous Province.

23.04.2018

Within the framework of the DAAD-PPP-funded Research “Large Igneous Province Paraná-Etendeka” (Project-ID 57389574) the Dept. for Geo- and Environmental Sciences (Section Volcanology) invites students to the following MSc. in Earth Sciences.

Research Theme: Textural and mineralogical characterisation of highly devitrified extensive rheoignimbrites in a Large Igneous Province.
A continuation of the studies as a PhD Student is possible. In this case a grant application for 2,5 years is planned for 2019.
Location: Munich/ LMU
Start date: August – September 2018
Requirements: Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Geoscience;

Your responsibilities:
• Sampling and fieldwork in Brazil (September 2018);
• Studying the devitrification products from felsic volcanic rocks, from (partially weathered) effusive and explosive deposits;
• Microscopic and X-ray diffraction studies of mineral textures of high-grade rheoignimbrites;
• Publishing of the scientific results in highly-ranked international journals;

The research is part of a collaboration of scientists from the following Universities and or institutions: LMU/München, USP/São Paulo, UFRGS/Rio Grande do Sul, UNESP/Rio Claro; DAAD-CAPES; FAPESP;
We investigate mainly volcanic styles and DEVITRIFICATION processes in a range of volcanic products of the Paraná-Etendeka large igneous province (Brazil-Namibia-Angola; ca. 130 million years old).
